There is no sport it has not been adopted into – from football and basketball, to cricket and tennis – data analytics has changed sport. As technology evolves it only seems to be becoming more important, to everyone involved in sport.
Sports data analytics is the practice of gathering and interpreting performance related statistics. These stats include anything such as, speed of the player, heart rate, accuracy in passing, time in reaction and player movement.
Algorithms use sophisticated computers and artificial intelligence to analyse the stats and find potential areas for improvement. Coaches and analysts then use these findings to decide on strategies and training plans to enhance player performance. Data makes decisions more accurate as it eliminates guessing in terms of what should be done.
The largest advantage of data analytics is the improvements it has on individual athletes. Tracking systems or wearable devices are used in training and matches to track certain statistics. Key physical aspects that could be tracked were heart rate, speed, stamina and workload.
Analysing all the data produced allows the coach to recognize different aspects of performance under varying situations. This makes it easier to pinpoint areas that need attention, so a customized training program can be produced. For example, it may show that after a certain amount of time exercising a player’s pace significantly slows and their workout will be adapted so their stamina improves more efficiently.
The most common problem professional sportsmen face, is injury. However data analytics helps decrease the likelihood of it occurring. Using the system of tracking player movement within matches, can determine the physical stresses on a player.
When data is gathered which shows signs of fatigue in the player’s movements it flags potential risks before a major injury occurs. Also using the information given by data analytics can help increase speed of recovery from injury as a treatment program can be personalized for that particular player with the results taken from data.
Data analysis isn’t just useful for players it also works well when devising team tactics. Using statistics gathered from games helps the coach study opponents and how games went to identify particular formations and strategies that may be exploited during the match.
These stats can highlight certain formations or approaches used by a team during a match. Using this statistical knowledge, a coach can then form a plan that can overcome these strategies to win. In sports such as football, passing statistics and position could be analysed and then the optimal way to attack them found.
The modern analysis tools allow coaches to assess team performance on real-time. If an analysis of the team and players show that player performance is decreasing during a match it allows for an instant change. A substitution could be made to prevent a decline in standards further and help the team to victory. Strategies can be adjusted mid game to incorporate certain events occurring in the game, or how a particular opponent is behaving. Instant statistics make decisions far more efficient.
Data analysis is not just useful to the people directly involved with sports, it also affects the fans and increases entertainment value during a match. Stats allow broadcasters to explain various events during live matches for example showing which team is dominating statistics or analyzing chances in scoring. Fan interaction also increase during a match when they are involved with betting or fantasy leagues. In both there is a heavy reliance on detailed statistics.
However despite these benefits there are some obvious drawbacks. Data requires expensive equipment to be acquired and also talented analysts, smaller teams may struggle to find this resources. Privacy is also becoming an issue and people are concerned with the reliance of sport upon the latest technology. Sports will always be influenced by skill, talent and a strong team dynamic but is becoming increasingly influenced by technology.

Data analytics will undoubtedly become a significant part of sports in the future with advanced machines used, including artificial intelligence to develop greater insights into player performance and more precise tactical information.
It is almost inevitable that systems will allow the athlete to recognize all risks of injury. This technology can ensure a much faster rate of recovery due to its detailed tracking. It is also expected to become common in team formations and overall strategies used within the game. Virtual reality will probably also play a bigger role than it does now, allowing for smarter training for the athlete, however data will always play a big role.
Sports data analytics will play a big role in sport from now on as it will revolutionize the approach taken to coaching. It will allow for better fitness programs, quicker injury recovery and enhanced team strategy through more in-depth analysis of performance and opponents. Even though data still comes with its challenges, there is no doubt that sport would benefit greatly from its inclusion in to all levels of competition.
