India’s industrial economy is entering a new phase. The ability of workforce up skilling can itself become a business, providing education centres, industrial degrees and certification schemes.
However these sectors also present substantial difficulties. Capital costs may be high, technology rapid and qualification processes intensive. Suppliers to strategic industries may also have to comply with demanding standards of quality, reliability and testing. Sales can be slow because large manufacturers use extensive supplier approval procedures.
Innovators and entrepreneurs need patience, high technical competence and good financial planning skills rather than quick access to income.
India’s next industrial wave could unlock opportunities well beyond the factory. Semiconductors, space, electronics and solar are evolving into interconnected ecosystems that will need a sprawling network of specialised firms. Industry experts have identified these sectors as the leading themes behind India’s upcoming round of industrial investment, to which they have added others such as data centres and aerospace.
That means the greatest opportunity may not lie in manufacturing the marquee project, but in providing the service, software, engineering, technology, or component behind the marquee project.
For Indian entrepreneurs, this marks a new way of thinking; instead of asking, what big thing can I make, they will be able to ask what problem will the next generation of industries need someone to solve? That question could soon lead to one of India’s most vibrant streams of business.
On the horizon, however, lies India’s largest industrial future – in areas like semiconductors, space, electronics and solar. These sectors will be led by large investments and manufacturing hubs, but there will be much greater demand for a complex web of suppliers of technology and solutions, engineering firms, testing providers and MSMEs with specialised skills. It is an opportunity for entrepreneurs not to compete with the giants, but to provide niche solutions to industrial problems.
The key will be to develop specialised expertise, build technical capabilities and be known for partnership with larger players, who are the future of India’s manufacturing and technology journey. India’s future manufacturing is in the pipeline; the next wave of companies may be building it.
