The Role of Coaches in Building Championship Teams

Introduction

It is generally accepted that behind any championship sports team lies a dedicated and skilled sports coach responsible for seeing the athletes in a team to their full potential, both physically and mentally, in and out of the competitive sports arena. The coach’s role does, in fact, extend beyond simple strategy preparation and practice conducting, and extends to inspiring belief and developing discipline, as well as managing the cohesion of a sports team.

The coach of the sports team today is widely considered the driving force behind success, and more often than not, it is the decisions made by a coach that are what propel a sports team from merely an above average team into championship calibre.

Strategy Preparation

The development of competitive game strategies is one of the more significant roles of a sports coach. Sound, winning strategies are conceived by sports coaches when the team’s and the team’s opposition’s strengths and weaknesses are assessed in an effort to gain the upper hand.

A sports team’s failure to be elevated beyond being an above average team can usually be attributed to the inability to achieve a comprehensive plan with regard to attack and defense, not to mention playing style and formation. Every winning sports team will employ an effective game strategy, and a coach can and will utilize their analytical and decision-making skills to create one. In addition to the establishment of initial strategies and plans for matches and games, as the play develops it will be the coach’s responsibility to make adjustments in a timely fashion that ensure the athletes remain committed to the plan, disciplined and focused, even when things get difficult during a championship game.

Discipline and Work Ethic Development

Discipline is a fundamental trait in championship teams and the coaching staff have a large role in developing this quality. Good coaches work diligently to ensure athletes understand the value of hard work, consistency, reliability and commitment in their chosen sport. Not only does training prepare athletes physically, but it also aids them in building a sense of resilience and responsibility; the attributes which contribute to making someone a champion.

The ability to repeatedly and reliably execute goals regardless of setbacks, or even losses and defeat, are values good coaches pass on to their athletes. When an athlete is trained in discipline it is much easier for them to adhere to a specific behaviour under extreme pressure, which is often required when playing in a championship game.

Athlete Motivation

Another very important aspect of the sports team coach is that of motivating athletes. Athletes can experience numerous stresses and doubts at various stages in their playing career and can experience considerable physical and emotional exhaustion. The role of a sports coach is, amongst many other things, to ensure the athlete receives adequate positive feedback and support that they need in order to maintain their confidence through any challenge they face.

An excellent sports coach knows how to motivate each individual differently. Some athletes are fuelled by strong, direct coaching, others by more supportive, empathic and understanding techniques; any adequately motivated athlete will strive to play their part in an attempt to excel in the sport.

Sports Team

Team Dynamics

The successful dynamics of any championship sports team revolve around a positive level of communication, trust and mutual respect amongst the athletes on the team. These are vital relationships to establish and the sports coach plays a significant role in the creation of both team unity and team rapport.

A breakdown in communication or relationships on the court, will invariably have a negative effect on the way a sports team performs. The responsibility lies with the sports coach to intervene where necessary and sort out the problems which often arise. Such qualities can only be sustained with effective communication and a team working towards collective goals together.

Talent Identification and Development

Every coach of a sports team is entrusted with finding unique qualities in their players, which are then fostered and allowed to develop throughout their involvement with the sport. One athlete, for instance, may prove to be a leader for their sports team, whilst another possesses incredible natural ability and speed to be potentially one of the world’s top sprinters; the coach will be the first to recognize the true abilities within their athletes and set them on their path.

It goes without saying that young athletes learn considerably from quality coaches far beyond that that they will glean from most other sources, but elite athletes also learn to excel to the highest possible level. Many accomplished sports stars only reached their potential because they had influential coaches behind them who genuinely believed in them and supported them through a career full of ups and downs. Since team development can carry with it long term benefits it will fall to sports coaches to identify the sports team superstars of the future and take the measures needed to develop their potential.

Pressure and Adversity Management

Every champion sports team will encounter its problems or difficult moments; however, the coaching staff is more often than not responsible for helping athletes negotiate these tests of will. Pressured situations are a very common occurrence in sports, however a sports team coach is trained to assist their players to remain calm, composed and most importantly, focused, during these critical periods.

Errors and poor performance, criticism and abuse, both from fans and the media alike are, and will always be a large part of life in sports. Coaches will work to ensure that their athletes can learn from and then overcome such issues and still maintain their championship attitude during a game. Athletes who can play in exactly the same way as they always have, under the duress of a championship match, is a trait great coaches help to bring out in athletes.

The coaching of a sports team is far more than just about performing in games and matches.

Conclusion

By creating sound strategies, instilling discipline in their players, encouraging athletes to develop to their fullest potential, identifying potential superstars on their team, and establishing excellent communication on the sports team, sports coaches can encourage an atmosphere in which athletes feel it necessary to push themselves to perform their absolute best. It is the formation of an incredibly cohesive and talented sports team and an aura of respect and confidence around that team which leads it to championship glory. In all of the varying factors that go into the composition of a sports team, there is absolutely no doubt that the sports coach stands alone as being the key component.
